Breast augmentation is a fantastic procedure for women who want to enhance their overall figure, but breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime. This blog discusses how long implants typically last, which implant material may last longer than others, and how to maintain the results of breast augmentation.

The Benefits of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a wonderful procedure that enhances a woman’s breasts—and her confidence. Beyond just increasing the size of the breasts, breast augmentation with silicone or saline implants can correct asymmetries, create more cleavage, balance the patient’s figure, and open up more clothing options.

It’s no secret that breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, but prospective patients want to know how long they can expect these results to last. The answer? It depends. Most patients who have successful breast augmentations keep their implants for 10 to even 20 years with no problem, but everyone is different.

How Long Do Implants Last?

When we consider the longevity of breast augmentation, what we’re really talking about is how long the implants last. Breast implants are medical devices available in various sizes, materials, and textures. Silicone implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a cohesive gel, while saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline. With a wide margin of difference, generally, patients can expect their breast implants to last at least 10 years. This number varies widely, and experts note that there’s no reliable indicator of how long a particular implant will last; however, as implants age, the risk of rupture increases.

Because silicone implants are made of a stronger, more cohesive gel, they may last slightly longer than saline implants, with a lifespan of about 10 to 20 years. Alternatively, saline implants typically have a slightly shorter lifespan, at 10 to 15 years. Of course, this is different for everyone.

Saline vs. Silicone: Which Is Better?

The choice between saline and silicone implants is highly personal, as each type has pros and cons and yields different aesthetic and functional results. However, regarding implant lifespan, it may not be as simple as choosing silicone simply because it tends to last a little longer.

Saline, while it may not last as long, is generally considered the safer option if a rupture occurs because it is filled with sterile saline. This saltwater solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body, with no risk to the patient. Additionally, while this may not seem like an obvious benefit, patients will immediately notice a visible deflation if their implant leaks.

Alternatively, silicone implants offer a more natural look and feel. The tradeoff is that they require more maintenance, as doctors recommend that patients undergo semi-regular MRI exams to assess for silent rupture. When a silicone implant leaks, it is rarely apparent to the patient and is often detected only by this type of scan.

How to Make Your Breast Augmentation Last Longer

There are a few things you can do to protect your breast implants and breast augmentation results:

  • Choose an experienced plastic surgeon for your procedure. Set yourself—and your breast implants—up for success by choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, ideally someone who specializes in breast procedures.
  • Wear supportive bras. From your early recovery bra to the daily bra once you are fully healed, keep your breasts secure. Especially during exercise, reducing movement reduces stress on the breast capsule, helping prevent implant displacement or tissue damage.
  • Maintain a stable weight. While weight fluctuations are normal, try to avoid major changes, as they can stretch the skin, affect breast size (more fat means bigger breasts), and alter the position of your implants.
  • Attend regular check-ups and breast imaging. This is especially relevant for patients with silicone implants. These check-ups can detect silent rupture, capsular contracture, or other risks.
  • Do self-checks for any changes in breast sensation, shape, or comfort. Be your own advocate by reporting any changes to your doctor.

Breast augmentation is a safe and effective procedure for enhancing the shape and size of your breasts exactly to your specifications to improve your overall figure and self-confidence. Working with an experienced plastic surgeon, you can plan your ideal procedure for results that will look beautiful and give you a boost of confidence.
